Attorney General’s Office Refutes Allegations of Coercion in Ato Forson Trial
Attorney General’s Office’s Refute
The Attorney General’s office has issued a statement vehemently denying allegations made by Richard Jakpa, the third accused person in the trial of Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, that Attorney General Godfred Dame coerced him into providing false testimony against Ato Forson. According to the statement, the Attorney General has not approached any of the accused persons, including Jakpa, to seek their cooperation or evidence in the case.
The statement, signed by Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tuah Yeboah, clarified that the Republic has already established a prima facie case against all the accused persons and has not required or desired their cooperation. It emphasized that neither the Attorney-General nor any officer from the Office of the Attorney-General has approached any of the accused persons to obtain evidence from them.

The statement also revealed that Jakpa had, on multiple occasions, proposed plea bargaining or plea negotiations to the Republic through the Attorney-General, but this proposal has not been accepted. It assured that the Attorney-General has not engaged Jakpa or any other accused person to give false testimony in the matter.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) had earlier expressed concern over what it views as a clear case of persecution against Dr. Forson, who has been a prominent figure in opposing the current government’s policies. The NDC Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, described the incident as a “clear case of persecution” and accused the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration of lacking integrity and perverting the course of justice.
The NDC has announced its intention to hold a press conference to present evidence supporting its claims. The Attorney General’s office has maintained that it has not yielded to pressure from any quarters to discontinue the prosecution of Ato Forson.
This development highlights the ongoing tensions between the ruling government and the opposition NDC, with the latter accusing the former of political persecution. The trial of Ato Forson and others is a high-profile case that has generated significant public interest and political debate.
The NDC has been vocal in its criticism of the government’s handling of the case, with many of its members and supporters taking to social media to express their outrage and solidarity with Ato Forson. The party has also accused the government of using the judiciary to silence its political opponents and undermine democracy.
In contrast, the government has maintained that the case against Ato Forson and others is a criminal matter that must be prosecuted independently of political considerations. The Attorney General’s office has assured that the trial will be conducted fairly and in accordance with the law, without any interference or pressure from the government or any other external factor.
As the trial continues, it remains to be seen how these allegations and counter-allegations will impact the outcome of the case. One thing is certain, however: the political tensions and public interest surrounding this case will continue to simmer, with many watching closely to see how the judiciary will handle this high-profile matter.
In the midst of these political tensions, it is essential to remember that the rule of law and the integrity of the judiciary must be upheld. The Attorney General’s office and the judiciary must ensure that the trial is conducted fairly, without any external influence or coercion, and that justice is served in accordance with the law.

The NDC’s press conference and the evidence it presents will be closely watched, and the Attorney General’s office must respond accordingly to address the allegations made. Ultimately, the outcome of this case will have significant implications for the political landscape and the rule of law in Ghana.
