All markets and shops found in Central Business District (CBD) to be shut on July 13 for the Homowo clean up exercise
Preparation for Homowo clean-up exercise
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a temporary closure of all shops and markets in the Central Business District (CBD) on Saturday, July 13, 2024. The closure, which will be in effect from 6 am to 12 noon, is to facilitate the Homowo clean-up exercise.
The Homowo clean-up campaign is an initiative of the Ga Traditional Council (GTC), led by the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II. The campaign is being organized in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, the Ministry of Interior, Local Government Authorities, and Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
The exercise aims to promote environmental cleanliness and transform Accra into one of the cleanest cities in Africa. Already, several areas have been covered, including Sempe, Gbese, Abola, Asere, Dogo Beach, Otublohum, Akumanjen, Ngleshie, and June 4th Market.

According to Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at AMA, the success of the clean-up exercise depends on the active participation of residents. He urged all stakeholders, including residents, businesses, market leaders, transport unions, and students, to join the exercise with their tools.
The AMA emphasized that the exercise would be strictly enforced by Environmental Health Officers, and residents who fail to participate would face sanctions according to the AMA Sanitation, Cleaning, and Communal Labour Bye-laws 2017. The closure affects shops and businesses in Makola, Okaishie, Kantamanto, Rawlings Park, CMB, Korle Gonno, and Korle Bu.
Pharmaceutical and health facilities, as well as financial institutions, are exempt from the closure to ensure the safety and efficiency of the clean-up activities. The AMA encouraged residents to take ownership of the exercise and make it a habit to keep their surroundings clean.
The Homowo clean-up campaign is a significant initiative to enhance environmental cleanliness in Accra. The AMA’s efforts to promote a clean and healthy environment are commendable, and the participation of all stakeholders is crucial to achieving this goal. By working together, we can transform Accra into a clean and beautiful city.
The exercise also aims to promote community engagement and social responsibility among residents. The AMA encouraged residents to take pride in their city and work together to keep it clean. The clean-up exercise is a step in the right direction towards achieving a clean and sustainable environment.
