SSNIT Hotels Sale: Cancel Entire Deal, Not Just Rock City’s Involvement – Angel Carbonu
SSNIT Hotels Sales:
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) President, Angel Carbonu, has expressed disappointment and frustration with Rock City Hotel’s decision to withdraw from the bid to purchase 60% of SSNIT’s stake in four hotels. This development comes after Organised Labour announced a nationwide strike over the controversial deal, citing concerns about the potential consequences on Ghanaian workers and the economy.

Despite Rock City Hotel’s withdrawal, Carbonu insists that the only acceptable outcome is for SSNIT to entirely cancel the sale of the hotels. He emphasized that the withdrawal of one bidder does not address the fundamental issues with the sale, which has been widely criticized as not being in the best interest of Ghanaian workers.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has also reiterated its stance that the sale is unjustifiable and urged SSNIT to terminate the deal. The TUC argued that the sale would lead to significant job losses and negatively impact the country’s economy. The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana have pledged their support for the strike, with the GMA announcing a phased withdrawal of services starting from July 15.
The strike has garnered widespread support, with many Ghanaians expressing concerns about the potential consequences of the sale on the country’s economy and workers’ welfare. Carbonu’s unwavering stance reflects the widespread sentiment that the sale must be entirely abrogated to address the concerns of all stakeholders.
The developments have sparked a national debate about the role of SSNIT and its mandate to manage pension funds. Many have questioned the wisdom of selling off strategic assets, citing concerns about the long-term implications for the country’s economy.
As the strike continues, the country remains in a state of uncertainty. The outcome of this impasse will have far-reaching consequences for Ghanaian workers, the economy, and the country’s future. The government has been urged to intervene and resolve the issue to prevent further disruption to the economy.
The strike has also highlighted the need for greater transparency and accountability in the management of pension funds. Many have called for a review of SSNIT’s investment strategy and for greater consultation with stakeholders before major decisions are made.
