4% public sector salary increment, the principle of “leadership by example” is not applicable here
- 4% public sector salary increment is sad news for workers
- Salaries increased by 79%, 57%, 53% for the presidency, minister, and their deputies.
- The principle of “leadership by example” is not applicable here
The civil servants of Ghana can look at the approved 4% public sector salary increment and wonder if they are valued by the state. What can a 4% increment do for employees when the politician who is complaining about the economy has shot salaries of those in its circles by a whopping 79%, 57%, 53% for the presidency, minister, and their deputies?
The gap between the incomes of political appointees and that of the civil servant is already a wide gap, but the increment the former received further widens the gap. Thus making the disadvantaged civil servant poorer by the day.
4% public sector salary increment and the absence of the principle of “leadership by example
The salary of the President of Ghana at a point Ghanaians have been called on to sacrifice clearly shows that the principle of “leadership by example” is not applicable here.
We were paying the President of the Republic of Ghana Ghc29,000.00 every month when we were in normal times but today that we are not in normal times yet we pay our leader, President Nana Addo Ghc47,000.00 every month so why deny public sector workers their salary increment with such frivolous excuses that we are not in normal times?
Sadly, the president who determines the salary of every public sector worker had increased his salary from Ghc29,000.00 to Ghc47,000.00, with four years’ salary arrears of Ghc18,000.00 every month.
The increase from Ghc29,000.00 to Ghc47,000.00 is about 60%.
We’re told by TUC leadership that they accepted the 4% public sector salary increment because of the Covid-19 effect on the economy and the possibility of retrenchment in the public sector if the government accepted their demand for a 10% increase.

Now, the question is, how come Covid-19 effect on the economy can increase the president’s salary by about 60% but can only increase all public sector workers by only 4%?

The best the leadership of this nation can offer is to ensure the principle of “leadership by example” is applied in this matter.
