Former President John Dramani Mahama has voiced grave concerns regarding the safety protocols surrounding the recent mishap involving a newly introduced train on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line The incident, occurring on April 18, 2024, has prompted Mahama to question the adequacy of pre-trial assessments.

Taking to the social media platform X (formerly known to be Twitter)in response to the accident, Mahama highlighted significant oversights in the preparatory measures preceding the Poland-Ghana train test trial operation. He specifically raised questions about the absence of track inspection prior to the test ride and queried the duration the vehicle had been on the track before commencement of the trial. Mahama’s apprehension was underscored by his statement, “How can you test a new railway line without checking the track first? How long was the vehicle on the track before the test run? If I were President, I’d be asking some serious questions.” – he says.

Compounding the gravity of the situation were subsequent legal proceedings. Abel Dzidotor, the driver of the involved truck, in the well known Poland – Ghana train accident on 18th of this month, received a six-month jail sentence as a result. Abel Dzidotor confessed to three of the four charges against him, including reckless driving and unlawful damage.
Mahama’s outspokenness on these matters underscores the critical importance of rigorous safety measures and comprehensive inspections throughout all phases of railway development and operation.
