Ghana to cough Over GHS150k monthly salary for Nana Addo, Bawumia and spouses

The reality with the emoluments report is that Ghana would cough over GHS150k monthly as salary for Nana Addo, Bawumia, and their spouses.

Whiles the country continues to struggle out of the challenges the Covid-19 pandemic has brought on many citizens who face the harsh realities of the impact of the pandemic, the report of the emoluments committee report indicates that Ghana will pay a total of GHS152,776.00 are monthly salary for the first and second families of the land.

GHS150k monthly salary for Nana Addo, Bawumia, and spouses -Break down

The Emoluments Committee’s decision to pay salaries and allowances was agreed on as though the First and Second Ladies were article 71 officeholders. Per the decisions reached the president is to be paid a  monthly salary of GHC 47,277 whiles his Vice takes home GHC 39,397.

Again, cabinet minister-MP will be paid GHC 33,270, while all members of the Council of State will receive a monthly pay of  GHH 26,266.

A total of GHS80,547 will be bagged by President Akufo Addo and the first lady Mrs. Rebecca Akufo Addo thus ( President – GHS47,277 and First lady GHS33,270)

Another GHS70,229.00 will be received by Vice President Bawumia – GHS39,397.00 and the second lady – GHS32,832.

The Ghanaian people have openly displayed their disagreement with regards to the recommendations of the Emoluments Committee which proposed the salaries for the First and Second Ladies which spark public outrage.

Ahead of the 2016 general elections, the President had promised Ghanaians to protect the public purse and to ensure, no needless payments or expenditures are made from the public kitty.

Ghanaians have questioned the actions of the leadership of government viz-a-viz the current decision to regularize salaries for the first and second vice who are not employed by the state and give them back pay from 2017  to date.

Whiles the First and Second Ladies are not employed by the state like the President and Vice President, attempts to stitch the former two into Article 71 Office Holders create a dangerous and unfortunate situation. There is no legal or constitutional basis for this unpopular move by the NPP-led government.

Not long ago, Ghanaians were told to sacrifice for the nation, due to the coronavirus. The question many have asked is this. To what extent does the approval of salaries for the First and Second ladies explain the call by the government for Ghanaians to brace themselves and sacrifice?

Ghana’s economy is under severe stress, many unemployed graduates and youth are looking for jobs. The total of GHS66,102.00 per month approved for the First and Second lady can pay several Ghanaians, win many families from hardship every month not to talk of the several hundreds of thousands to be paid to the wives of the two leaders. Is it not time to pay the spouses of all government employees?
