The injunction to stop ongoing UTAG strike

UTAG following a 10-day interlocutory order granted by the National Labour Commission (NLC) has been requested to halt the continuing strike action that has resulted in the delay of end-of-semester examinations of two universities.

After the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology announced the delay of final examinations, the Court issued an order directing all members of UTAG to return to work.

“It is hereby ordered that the respondent [University Teachers Association of Ghana] by itself, its executives, officers, members, agents, servants, etc., are restrained from continuing with the current industrial action,” the court said.

However, in a separate statement sent to Ghanaeducation.org on Friday, the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology announced the end-of-second-semester exams had been suspended.

According to a press release from the University of Ghana (UG), the university will stay open, but academic activity will resume after the government answers the complaints of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which is headquartered in Kumasi, has also said that a new date for the final examinations would be announced to students and staff at a later date.

After failing to reach an agreement with the government over university professors’ working conditions, including research allowances, members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) are on a national strike to demand what is due them.

Following a failed meeting on August 2, 2021, the UTAG National Executive Committee (NEC) advised members to cease all teaching and associated operations, including the marking of test scripts. UTAG is yet to react to the injunction to stop ongoing UTAG strike.
