UN Peace Ambassador sympathizes with Appiatse explosion victims

The International Association of World Peace Advocates says the aftermath of the deadly explosion at Appiatse near Bogoso in the Western Region has brought to the fore the need to educate Ghanaians on what to do in the event of an explosion.

The Country Director for the International Association of World Peace Advocates, Dr Samuel Owusu explained that people who had tried to arrive at the scene of the incident were the people who were mostly affected by the explosion.

According to media reports the truck driver tried to warn local residents to flee after the motorcycle caught fire.

In a statement, the International Association of World Peace Advocates say they were saddened by the tragic events and equally upset that regulations in the law are not enforced to the letter.

Dr. Owusu pointed out that the accident was due to the negligence of people who failed to ensure that laws are enforced and the right thing is done.

The statement further extended the condolences to the victims of the accident and their families and entreated the appropriate agencies to educate Ghanaians on their responsibilities in disaster management to avoid such fatalities.

Information provided by the police regarding the Appiatse tragedy puts the total casualties at 190.

Out of this number, 96 of them have been discharged from the hospital, while 36 are still receiving treatment.

384 persons have been displaced and are being housed at a Roman Catholic Parish hall at Bogoso.

The death toll has been put at 13.
