STUNNING TWIST: Akufo-Addo will sign Anti-Gay Bill into law; he has no choice- Alban Bagbin

No one, not even Ghana’s president, will be able to halt the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ measure that the house is now debating, according to Speaker Alban Bagbin.
Once the anti-gay bill passes parliament, he claims President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be compelled to sign it into law.
Akufo-Addo will sign Anti-Gay Bill into law
Speaking during parliamentary consideration of the anti-LGBTQ+ Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill (draft) on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, the speaker went on to say that those who disagree with the bill can challenge it in court once it is passed.
As far as the Constitution is concerned, it is not the case that when someone raises issues with the laws we enact that are fundamentally flawed; such issues may also be of a legal rather than a constitutional or even a policy nature. The veto authority, however, does not belong to the president.
He simply revises and resubmits it to the house for approval if they are adamant that our previous decision was correct. He concluded by saying the president must give his assent.
After that, Ghanaians can take it to any court for interpretation, the speaker said. The present is there to make comments, so we aren’t bound to be looking over our shoulder.
Navigating a Complex Landscape: Ghana’s Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill and the Path Forward
Ghana, a nation known for its vibrant culture and strong sense of community, has recently sparked debate with the proposed Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill. This bill, widely referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, has ignited discussions about individual rights, cultural values, and the future of inclusivity in Ghana.
The bill proposes a sweeping range of measures, including criminalizing same-sex relationships, promoting conversion therapy, and restricting the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals to express themselves freely. This has understandably caused significant concern for LGBTQ+ Ghanaians, their families, and allies.
However, the issue is multifaceted. Many Ghanaians hold strong cultural beliefs that view same-sex relationships as unacceptable. The bill’s proponents argue that it upholds these traditional values and protects the sanctity of marriage and family.
Finding common ground:
While understanding the cultural context is crucial, it’s important to recognize that human rights are universal. Every individual, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, deserves respect and protection under the law. Finding a path forward requires a nuanced approach that bridges cultural sensitivity with the fundamental principles of equality and non-discrimination.
Potential solutions include:
- Open dialogue: Fostering respectful and open conversations between all communities can help build understanding and empathy.
- Focus on human rights: Emphasizing the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of all Ghanaians, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
- Education and awareness: Promoting education and awareness campaigns can combat misinformation and prejudice, fostering a more inclusive society.
- Legal reform: Exploring alternative legislation that upholds traditional values while guaranteeing fundamental rights and preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
Embracing inclusivity:
Moving forward, it’s crucial to recognize that embracing inclusivity is not a threat to Ghanaian culture or values; it strengthens the nation’s fabric by recognizing and celebrating the diversity of its people. By prioritizing respectful discourse, protecting human rights, and seeking solutions that respect both tradition and inclusivity, Ghana can navigate this complex landscape and build a more equitable and just society for all.
