In a laudable ceremony, Former Child Sanitation Diplomat of the School Sanitation Solution Challenge, Maame Akua Ohenewaa Gyimah, presented a ‘mammoth’ citation of honor to Ing. George Asiedu for his exemplary work as the Coordinator of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water Project.
This highly respected project is a pivotal initiative aimed at improving sanitation and water supply in the Greater Accra region, one of the most rapidly urbanizing areas in Ghana.
The GAMA Sanitation and Water Project has been instrumental in addressing critical challenges faced by urban populations, particularly in sanitation, where access to safe and reliable facilities is paramount.
The project, since its inception, has been propelled forward under the guidance of Ing. George Asiedu, whose commitment and leadership have been vital in spearheading infrastructural development and public health promotion interventions.
Maame Akua Ohenewaa Gyimah, a celebrated child advocate for improved hygiene and sanitation, has played an influential role in leveraging support for such essential initiatives.
Her gesture to honor Ing. Asiedu is not only a testament to his individual contributions but also a recognition of the collective efforts of all who have been part of the GAMA project’s successes.
The citation bestowed upon Ing. George Asiedu highlights his dedication to service and unwavering focus on improving living standards through better access to sanitation and potable water.
The challenges encountered by the GAMA Sanitation and Water Project are not unique to Ghana but resonate with the global struggle to provide adequate sanitation infrastructure.
According to the United Nations, billions of people worldwide lack access to safely managed sanitation services, which has profound implications for health, dignity, and socio-economic development.
The work of individuals like Ing. Asiedu and initiatives like the GAMA project are critical contributions toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which is to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Under Ing. Asiedu’s coordination, the GAMA project has achieved significant milestones, including the construction of over 30,000 household toilets and improved access to water supply services for numerous residents in the targeted localities.
Through innovative financing models and stakeholder engagement, the project has fostered partnerships between the government, private sector, and local communities, ensuring sustainability and local ownership.
Maame Gyimah’s presentation of the citation was met with commendations from various quarters, acknowledging the difference that the project has made in the lives of the beneficiaries.
Clean and safe sanitation is not just a matter of infrastructure but also about dignity and quality of life.
This event underscored the important relationship between active civic leadership and governmental execution in tackling sanitation challenges.
During the presentation, Maame Gyimah emphasized the need for continued investment in sanitation and praised the Ghanaian government’s commitment to providing the necessary support for such initiatives.
She urged other leaders and organizations to take inspiration from the work accomplished through the GAMA Sanitation and Water Project and to strive for greater impact within their areas of influence.
As the world continues to confront the sanitation crisis, the contribution of individuals like Ing. Asiedu and advocates like Maame Gyimah cannot be overstated.
Their roles model effective collaboration and concerted action in the fight against disease and poverty through improved sanitation.
The surprise honor bestowed upon Ing. Asiedu serves as a call to action for others to partake in and support the noble cause of sanitation for all.
“So, I’m very grateful and happy that the young ones are showing appreciation, and I know that one day I’ll be remembered for the little support I’ve been giving towards helping address the sanitation issues the country is facing,” said Ing. Asiedu after receiving the honor.
The presentation was made at a media engagement event, a ceremony organized to highlight the GAMA’s project status in Accra on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.
