Govt approves 15% increase in local government workers (CLOSAG) pay

• CLOSAG to receive a 15% increase in pay for 2021.
• Increase to be backdated to January 2021 and paid till December 2021.
• Other public workers to enjoy a 4% pay rise.

15% increase local government pay effective January 2021

A document indicating government has given a pay rise of a 15% to civil and local government service workers effective January 2021 has hit the internet. This increase is 11% higher than what teachers and other public sector workers are to receive.

The Civil and Local Government Service Association of Ghana (CLOSAG) has secured a 15% increase in basic salary for the year 2021 while other services and agencies, including teachers, have to settle for 4%.

A letter dated 12th July and received by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department indicated that the fifteen percent (15%) premium was reached through memoranda of understanding between the government and the CLOSAG.

The letter stated that

“In line with the Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) reached between Government represented by the Hon. Minister of Employment and Labour Relations and the Executive of the Civil and Local Government Service Association of Ghana (CLOSAG), approval is given for the payment of a fifteen percent (15) premium for the 2021 monthly basic salary of the staff of Civil and Local Government Services.”

This agreement will take effect from January 1,  2021.

The letter furthered that arrears for January 2021 will be paid in August 2021, those relating to February to April will be paid in subsequent months until November whiles that of May and June 2021 will be settled in December 2021.
