Corruption always fights back
Daniel Yao Domelevo, a former auditor general, claims that when attempts are taken to counteract corruption, those who support it would take every necessary action to retaliate.
His remarks come in response to a motion to remove Mr. Kissi Agyebeng from his position as Special Prosecutor that President Akufo-Addo submitted to the Chief Justice.
Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu sent the appeal, dated April 30, 2024, to the President, who then forwarded it to Justice Gertrude Torkornoo on May 6, 2024.

Mr. Amidu makes accusations of abuses involving judges and the administration of justice, as well as procurement violations in the purchase of cars for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Additional claims include infringements on people’ rights via erroneous staff nominations to the office, arrests and detentions, and information access violations.
“I have stated time and again that if you fight corruption, corruption will fight you back using any means available, so it is not a surprise to me at all,” Mr. Domelevo said in an interview with JoyNews AM on May 17. The source, Martin Amidu, whom Agyebeng succeeded as the OSP, surprises him a little.
When questioned about why he would characterize Mr. Amidu’s actions as corruption battling corruption, Mr. Domelevo retaliated by saying it is not shocking at all.
You’re unaware of the tactics used by corruption. Corruption will not be defeated by corrupt means. What I’m trying to say is that, in my opinion, if you fight people in the open, others may try to find a way to fight back.
It will pretend and use what appear to be very legitimate reasons. I always say that there is a story behind a story, so it’s hard for all of us to know what that story is.
The thing that surprises me is where it’s coming from. Although Martin is a very good friend of mine, our moral standards are not the same.

Furthermore, I would not take part in any way in my successor’s removal from office. In his instance, even I am able to declare that he resigned. Kissi Agyebeng didn’t seem to have any involvement in it. I believe my successor had a part to play, but I won’t be taking on a formal role.”
Domelevo claims that in addition to the case being peculiar due to the petitioner’s identity, it might also validate rumors, which some observers on the case have previously raised, that the decision was driven by feelings that the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, is surpassing his predecessor.
“There are times when you know what to do, but you let other people handle it because, as Senanu implied, it appears that he is outperforming him and he wants to remove him from office. As for me, I won’t let that happen before people interpret my actions as having those intentions,” he said.
“There’s a double standard when it comes to enforcing procurement offenses. Those in power, including the current Electoral Commission and even the presidency, are handled with leniency when they violate procurement laws. However, when someone is on the opposing side and out of favor, they are held accountable for the same offenses. While I agree that no one is above the law and everyone should face the consequences of their actions, the selective application of procurement laws is becoming increasingly problematic. Many significant procurement offenses go unaddressed, while individuals who are deemed undesirable are targeted and held accountable.”
