Ato Forson was targeted
Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has made a striking claim that Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, is being deliberately targeted in the ambulance procurement case. In an extensive interview on Joy FM’s Newsnite on Tuesday, June 11, Buah vehemently asserted that the Minority side firmly believes in Dr. Ato Forson’s innocence and that he is being persecuted for his vocal criticism of the government.

According to Buah, Dr. Ato Forson’s leadership role in exposing issues such as the E-levy and the government’s alleged “haircut” plan has made him a target. “We believe that the reason he is in court is because of his leadership role in bringing out issues… Ato Forson, as the ranking member on finance, led the way, and because of that, he has been a target, and that is why he is in court,” Buah claimed. He emphasized that Dr. Ato Forson’s persistent criticism of the government’s policies and actions has made him a thorn in the flesh of the ruling party.
Buah pointed to the recent revelation of an alleged attempt by the Attorney General to pressure the third accused, Richard Jakpa, into compliance as further evidence of this targeting. This development, Buah argued, confirms that Dr. Ato Forson is being unfairly targeted. He expressed shock and dismay at the alleged attempt to coerce Jakpa into testifying against Dr. Ato Forson, stating that it was a clear indication of the government’s desperation to convict their colleague.
The NDC MPs boycotted Parliament to show solidarity with their colleague in court, with Buah stating that it would be “unconscionable” for them to abandon Dr. Ato Forson in his time of need. “There is no way we will do that,” he emphasized. Instead, the NDC MPs will continue to support their leader by joining him in court and then returning to Parliament, as they did on Tuesday, June 11. “He is an innocent man, he needs our support,” Buah noted.
Buah’s claims of targeting and political persecution have added fuel to the ongoing debate about the ambulance procurement case. The Minority side has consistently maintained that the case against Dr. Ato Forson is a witch hunt, designed to silence him and intimidate other opposition lawmakers. The ruling party, on the other hand, has insisted that the case is a criminal matter, and that Dr. Ato Forson must face the consequences of his actions.
As the case continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Dr. Ato Forson will be exonerated or found guilty of the charges leveled against him. One thing is certain, however: the NDC MPs will continue to stand by their leader and ensure that his rights are protected throughout this ordeal. The High Court’s decision on June 13, 2024, will be a crucial turning point in the case, and all eyes will be on the court as it rules on whether to admit into evidence the audio recording involving the Attorney-General and businessman Richard Jakpa.

In the meantime, the political tensions surrounding the case will continue to simmer, with the opposition NDC party and the ruling party trading accusations and counter-accusations. The outcome of the case will have significant implications for Ghana’s political landscape, and all stakeholders are watching with bated breath as the drama unfolds.
