“We don’t delight in witch-hunting NDC” – Afenyo-Markin
Afenyo Markin denies allegations
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has vehemently denied allegations that the government is abusing its power to target members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). These allegations were made by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Chairman of the NDC, who accused the government of persecuting the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, over a court case involving the purchase of an ambulance.

Afenyo-Markin dismissed these claims as false and malicious, stating that the government has no interest in witch-hunting the NDC. He pointed out that if the government had wanted to prosecute former NDC ministers and leaders, it would have done so when it came into power. However, President Akufo-Addo chose not to pursue prosecution, despite calls from some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to do so.
The Majority Leader explained that many NPP extremists had pushed for the prosecution of former NDC ministers who were found to be taking double salaries. However, President Akufo-Addo intervened and stopped the prosecution, citing the need to show mercy and move the country forward. Afenyo-Markin stated that this decision demonstrated the government’s commitment to reconciliation and its willingness to put the past behind it.
He also pointed out that the government had not prosecuted other NDC leaders who were involved in similar scandals, such as the controversial sale of state assets. Afenyo-Markin argued that if the government had wanted to persecute the NDC, it would have done so by now. Instead, it has chosen to focus on governance and improving the lives of Ghanaians.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, has applied for a mistrial in the ongoing ambulance procurement trial. He cited a leaked telephone conversation between the third accused, Richard Jakpa, and the Attorney-General, Godfred Dame, which he believes demonstrates professional misconduct on the part of the AG. The leaked tape appears to show the Attorney General soliciting testimony from Jakpa against Dr. Ato Forson, which has sparked calls for the resignation of the Attorney General
The NPP has refuted the claims made in the audio, stating that it has been “doctored and manipulated” with malicious intent. However, the Attorney General has yet to comment on the tape personally. Dr. Ato Forson is currently on trial for his alleged involvement in the procurement of defective ambulances for Ghana, which resulted in a financial loss to the state of 2.3 million Euros.
The ongoing trial and the leaked tape have sparked intense debate and discussion among Ghanaians, with some calling for the resignation of the Attorney General and others supporting the government’s stance. The developments have also raised questions about the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in Ghana.

In conclusion, the allegations of political persecution and witch-hunting are baseless and unfounded. The government has demonstrated its commitment to reconciliation and moving the country forward. The ongoing trial and the leaked tape are mere distractions from the real issues facing the country. Ghanaians must remain vigilant and focused on the important issues that affect their lives.
