Weija Gbawe GNAT Conference elects Felix Dzanku as new secretary

On March 18, 2025, the Weija Gbawe Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Local Conference took place at the ITS Conference Room in the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly Compound, culminating in the election of a new leadership team.
Felix Dzanku, an English teacher at Weija Municipal Assembly Junior High School, emerged victorious as the new Secretary, securing 39 votes against his competitor Georgina Inkoom from Weija Model School, who received 29 votes.
The conference brought together educators, dignitaries, and advocates to address pressing issues in the education sector. The proceedings were opened by outgoing chairman Mr. Edward Nimako, who welcomed participants and expressed gratitude for their commitment to educational excellence.
The keynote address was delivered by Julius Sarpei, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Gbawe Weija Constituency, on behalf of Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe.
His speech, themed “Learning for Sustainable Futures: Attracting and Retaining Teachers for Quality Education and Union Participation,” stressed the urgent need to improve teachers’ working conditions and foster environments that enhance their well-being.
Mr. Charles Odoom, the Municipal Director of Education, also addressed the attendees, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to tackle challenges within the education system. He urged teachers to engage in professional development and take initiative in shaping education’s future.
The conference featured a significant address by Dr. Joseph Kobla Wemakor, Executive Director of Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG), who spoke on the harmful effects of corporal punishment in schools. He advocated for the adoption of non-violent disciplinary methods to create safer and more respectful learning environments.
The election process was conducted seamlessly under the supervision of Madam Emma Asante, Chairperson of the GNAT Election Committee. The newly elected officers are:

– Vice Chairperson: Esther
– Vice Secretary: Josephine Adama Hammond
– Treasurer: Cynthia Eddie Chapman
– Youth Coordinator: Joseph Odotei Odoi
– GNATLAS Coordinator: Faiza
– Education Office Representative: Madam Anita Gyefour
– Basic School Coordinator: Emmanuel Kwaku Boateng
In his acceptance speech, Felix Dzanku expressed sincere gratitude for the confidence placed in him. He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the welfare of all GNAT members and called for united efforts to transform the educational landscape in Weija Gbawe.
