Unity and Empowerment: African Nurses and Midwives gather at landmark conference in Accra

The inaugural African Nurses and Midwives Confederation Conference kicked off at the GS Plaza Hotel in Shiashie, Accra, bringing together healthcare professionals under the theme “African Nurses and Midwives, Fostering Health For All in Africa.”
This landmark event aims to strengthen collaboration and advocate for improved conditions within the nursing and midwifery sectors across the continent.
The conference commenced with a powerful address from the Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Ghana’s Minister of Health, who reassured attendees that no nurse or midwife would be dismissed or suspended in the health sector.
Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), welcomed this affirmation and highlighted the vital partnership between the Ministry of Health and professional associations in addressing sector challenges.
In an interview during the opening ceremony, Ofori-Ampofo articulated the significant role that nurses and midwives play in the economic development of nations. “Investment in our profession is essential,” she underscored, calling for fair remuneration and supportive working conditions that enable healthcare professionals to thrive.
The conference also marks the establishment of the African Nurses and Midwives Confederation, a crucial step towards unifying nursing and midwifery organizations across Africa. “Unlike Europe, Asia, and the Americas, Africa lacked a unified body for its health professionals,” Ofori-Ampofo explained.
This confederation aims to promote networking opportunities and influence health policy both regionally and globally.
Running from February 20 to 24, 2025, the conference has attracted a diverse group of participants eager to engage in dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration.
The GRNA boss encouraged all nurses and midwives to become active members of their professional organizations, reinforcing that every contribution counts toward making a tangible impact at both local and global levels.
