Serious opposition to Ekow Obeng Kenzo’s potential appointment as acting CEO of VRA

A significant backlash has emerged from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus and employees of the Volta River Authority (VRA) concerning the potential appointment of Mr. Ekow Obeng Kenzo as the acting Chief Executive.
The announcement of this possibility has sparked widespread fears that it could jeopardize the credibility and operational efficacy of the vital energy institution.
Mr. Kenzo’s candidacy comes under a cloud of serious allegations stemming from his involvement in a $52 million sole-sourcing procurement scandal, which implicated him alongside former Chief Executive, Mr. Emmanuel Antwi Darkwa.
This scandal was elucidated in a report aired on ‘With All Due Respect TV (WADR-TV),’ hosted by Kelvin Taylor, exposing troubling procurement practices that have put VRA’s transparency and financial accountability into question.
In addition to these allegations, Mr. Kenzo is accused of mishandling a crisis involving the Akosombo Dam. His decision to open the spillway gates without adequate consultation led to catastrophic flooding that affected thousands of residents in nearby communities.
Critics contend that his disregard for input from seasoned staff during previous spillage events reflects poorly on his crisis management capabilities.
These operational concerns extend to Mr. Kenzo’s leadership style, as many staff members describe him as a workplace “bully.” Allegations of authoritarian behavior, coupled with unprofessional conduct including inappropriate workplace relationships, have raised alarms about the internal atmosphere at VRA.
Moreover, despite his role as Deputy Chief Executive (Engineering & Operations), Mr. Kenzo has not contributed to new power generation developments. Observers criticize him for prioritizing the costly relocation of Ameri power units rather than expanding the national power grid.
Recently, Mr. Kenzo has made headlines with aggressive lobbying efforts to secure the Chief Executive position, leading to speculation about his motivations and ethics.
Anonymous sources claim he is employing questionable tactics, including potential bribery, to solidify his control over the leadership position, which raises significant concerns regarding the integrity of the VRA’s appointment process.
In response to these alarming developments, the NDC caucus and VRA staff are urging the appointing authorities to reconsider any plans to appoint Mr. Kenzo and instead conduct a full investigation into his past actions.
They argue that VRA must maintain its standards and avoid leadership characterized by allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
As a crucial entity within Ghana’s energy sector, the Volta River Authority requires leadership that prioritizes integrity and accountability.
The calls for a more competent and transparent governance structure reflect a collective desire for progress and stability in managing Ghana’s crucial energy resources.
