Rosatom Participates In International Conference On Safety and Security Of Radioactive Sources
On June 20-24, Vienna (Austria) hosts the International Conference on Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources, the key platform for the coordinated international approach to the issue.
The conference, which is the first of its kind to be held since 2013, brought together over 600 participants from many countries, including Russia.
“Radioactive sources are all around us, offering immense societal and economic benefits, but they may also pose a risk. Managing these sources well, protects us from accidental radiation exposure and keeps them away from people with malicious intent,” IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said speaking at the event’s launch.
Russia’s Sergey Chuvaev from the Science and Technology Center for Nuclear Physics Research (part of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation) presented the report on a new device for monitoring changes in the radiation situation in places for storage of the radioactive sources.
The system provides visualization of measurement results, generation of alarm signal and notification of the monitoring network operator in the event of a change in the radiation situation.
The use of such a system, which Rosatom already put in serial manufacturing, increases the level of safety in the storage and use of radioactive sources.
Over the course of five-day conference, the participants will discuss six main topics: safety and security matters of radioactive sources throughout their lifecycle; collaboration among national stakeholders; regulatory control of radioactive sources; sustainability and effectiveness of national infrastructures, including lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic; international cooperation; and preparation and response to radiological incidents and emergencies involving radioactive sources.
