Human Rights Reporters Ghana demands accountability following police arrests of Democracy Hub protesters
The Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG), a key player in media advocacy and human rights, in its recent statement has expressed strong condemnation of the Ghana Police Service’s unlawful arrest of around 40 citizens participating in a peaceful protest on September 21, 2024.
The demonstrators were raising their voices against significant national concerns such as state capture, widespread corruption, and the harmful effects of illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” on the nation’s water resources.
In a recent press release, HRRG reported that the police not only targeted protestors but also arrested innocent bystanders who were simply going about their everyday activities.
This arbitrary action represents a serious infringement on basic human rights and freedoms.
HRRG is particularly alarmed by the Ghana Police’s repeated use of excessive force and unlawful tactics, especially targeting young demonstrators.
These practices stand in stark opposition to the rights protected by the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, specifically Article 14, which ensures personal liberty, and Article 21, which safeguards the right to peaceful assembly.
By arresting individuals without just cause and employing aggressive measures to curb peaceful protests, the police are undermining citizens’ rights to legitimately express their concerns and assemble freely. Such conduct is viewed as a gross misuse of power and a significant violation of the rule of law.
In light of these events, HRRG demands that the Ghana Police Service immediately halt these illegal practices and respect the fundamental rights of all individuals.
The organization insists that authorities carry out a thorough investigation into these incidents and hold accountable those responsible for the unlawful actions.
Standing firm in solidarity with the affected individuals, HRRG calls on all citizens to be vigilant in the defense of their rights. Furthermore, the organization urges collaborative efforts among civil society, legal professionals, and human rights defenders to vehemently condemn these abuses and advocate for justice and accountability.
As Ghana navigates these troubling challenges, the importance of fostering a respectful relationship between law enforcement and the public remains critical.
HRRG emphasizes the need for dialogue that respects the fundamental rights of every citizen.
