HRRG praises police for swift action in cases of homophobic violence and journalist assault, calls for justice

Accra, June 11, 2025 — Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has commended the Ghana Police Service, under the leadership of Inspector-General Christian Tetteh Yohuno, for their rapid and commendable response to recent incidents involving human rights abuses.
The organization’s praise comes after initiating press statements and garnering public support amid growing concern over these cases.
The police’s prompt intervention follows two troubling incidents: the savage homophobic attack on young Kofi in Atonsu, Kumasi, and the assault on JoyNews journalist Latif Iddrisu at the EOCO Headquarters in Accra.
In a statement, HRRG highlighted that the swift arrest of suspects in both cases demonstrates a renewed commitment by law enforcement to uphold justice, safeguard victims, and reinforce Ghana’s rule of law.
“We are encouraged that Kofi, the victim of a heinous homophobic attack, has received immediate protection and support through the collaborative efforts of civil society and law enforcement authorities,” HRRG said. “His safety, well-being, and recovery are our top priorities. We call on the police to continue their diligent efforts to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice without delay.”
Regarding the assault on journalist Latif Iddrisu, HRRG welcomed the arrest of one suspect but urged the police to pursue and apprehend all individuals involved.
The organization emphasized that this attack is not only an assault on a journalist but also a direct threat to press freedom and the democratic principles underpinning Ghanaian society.
“No one should suffer violence because of who they are or what they do,” HRRG stated firmly.
The organization further called on the Ghana Police Service to remain steadfast in its duty to protect every Ghanaian, regardless of their background, profession, or beliefs, and to ensure that justice is fully and promptly served in both incidents.
HRRG is a pioneering non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting, defending, and protecting human rights across Ghana and beyond.
