HRRG Demands Justice for Kofi-A, Teen Survivor of Brutal Homophobic Attack in Kumasi

Kumasi, Ghana — May 2, 2025 — The Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) has condemned a violent homophobic attack on a teenage boy, identified as Kofi-A, which occurred in Atonsu, Kumasi between April 29 and May 1, 2025.
According to HRRG, the young victim was lured into a room by a group of young men under false pretenses and was then subjected to a brutal assault, which was recorded by the perpetrators. Reports indicate that the attackers intended to “beat the gay out of him,” an act that has left Kofi not only physically injured but also severely traumatized. His mother revealed that Kofi has since attempted suicide multiple times due to the ordeal.
HRRG has described the incident as a grave violation of Kofi’s fundamental human rights and a painful reminder of the threats faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Ghana.
Quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the group stated, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” emphasizing the need for swift and decisive action.
The organization is calling on the relevant authorities to:
- Launch a full investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible for the assault.
- Ensure Kofi’s safety through immediate protective measures and psychological support for him and his family.
- Provide legal and counseling services to assist in his recovery and reintegration.
“Violence based on sexual orientation is a violation of human dignity and cannot be tolerated in any society,” HRRG stated.
The group called on government agencies, law enforcement bodies, and civil society organizations to join in demanding justice for Kofi and to take concrete steps toward protecting vulnerable individuals from such targeted violence.
As Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” HRRG echoed this sentiment, urging the public not to remain silent.
“Kofi needs us now more than ever. His life and well-being depend on our collective response,” the statement concluded.
