Ghana launches ‘Bridging Histories’ initiative to promote culture and unity

Okaikwei North, Ghana — May 16, 2025 — Today marked the official launch of Bridging Histories Ghana, a program aimed at fostering cultural pride, strengthening community bonds, and empowering the youth.
The event took place at the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly and drew key leaders and stakeholders committed to societal transformation.
The ceremony kicked off with a keynote speech from Hon. Christian Tetteh Badger, Municipal Chief Executive of Okaikwei North.
Badger expressed his excitement about the project, noting, “This initiative is a vital step toward building inclusive communities where our heritage is celebrated and our youth are empowered to lead change.”
He emphasized the importance of fostering partnerships with community elders, chiefs, and institutions to ensure the project’s success.
Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni, Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, also delivered remarks praising the initiative’s role in challenging stereotypes and promoting intercultural understanding through storytelling.
She encouraged participants to embrace their cultural roots and serve as ambassadors of unity and progress.
A central feature of the launch was a storytelling activity led by Dr. Joana M. Burch-Brown, Founder of Bridging Histories.
Participants shared stories about their history, traditions, and cultural practices, illustrating the power of narrative in strengthening societal bonds.
In a brief interview, Dr. Burch-Brown shared insights on how the project originated in Bristol, UK, as a response to colonial history and acts of cultural repair.
She explained, “Bridging Histories works to reconnect communities through shared stories, indigenous wisdom, and mutual understanding.
Our goal is to foster reconciliation and build bridges across cultures, starting here in Ghana.”
The event also announced a partnership with the Rwandan Municipal Assembly to focus on environmental sustainability and education initiatives, emphasizing the importance of youth capacity building and ecological preservation.
Concluding the program, Hon. Badger remarked, “Let this initiative be a bridge—not just between the past and present, but between communities, generations, and ideas. Together, we can create a lasting legacy of cultural pride and social harmony.”
The launch fostered a sense of shared purpose among participants, many of whom committed to actively supporting and participating in upcoming activities. Organizers are optimistic that
Bridging Histories Ghana will serve as a powerful catalyst for cultural revival and community empowerment across the country.
