ADAE KESE: ROADS TO BE BLOCKED ON MAY 12
Adae Kese Festival (“big resting place”) is an important albeit rare celebration among the Ashantis in Ghana. There are two main periods for this celebration: one is Awukudae, and the other is Akwasidae.
It glorifies the achievements of the Asante kingdom. It was first celebrated to the achievement of statehood of the people, after the war that the Ashantis had their independence, in the Battle of Feyiase which they fought against the people of Denkyira.
It is also the occasion when the purification ceremony of Odwira is performed at the burial shrines of ancestral spirits. Generally, this coincides with the harvest season of yam and hence the ritual was also called the “Yam custom” by Europeans.
It is celebrated every two weeks by the people in accordance with the calendar of the Akans based on the cycle of forty-two days and nine months in their calendar.
The festival is mostly held to climax celebrations of specific achievements and milestones of the people of the Ashanti kingdom. The festival is a day of rest so it is forbidden to work on that day.
The Manhyia Palace has declared that on Sunday, May 12, all access roads will be closed. Only cars with the proper stickers will be allowed to use certain routes, according to a palace statement.
The Adae Kese ceremony is an important cultural event in the Ashanti Kingdom, and the Palace is taking steps to ensure that it runs smoothly and safely.

The Palace has advised motorists and pedestrians to plan ahead and make alternative arrangements for their journeys on Sunday. The road closures will be in place from early morning to late evening, and only authorized vehicles will be allowed to pass through the designated routes.

The May 11 announcement stated, “This is to give dignitaries attending the Adae Kese easy passage to the Palace.”
The Palace further stated that on Sunday, tricycles, also known as “pragia” and “aboboyaa,” are prohibited from the area surrounding Manhyia Palace.
