Gov’t not recruiting failed NTC licensure exam teachers cruel – Prof Opoku Agyemang
The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service seem to have decided that to recruit teachers who do not pass the NTC licensure examination.
This has been seen by the teaching fraternity as unfair giving that teachers taking the examination has already graduated and had what it takes to deliver on the job.
This NTC licensure examination unfair treatment would only keep many qualified teachers the government has spent its resource in training to go waste.
Former Minister for Education, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has also joined the call for the government to reconsider the new policy. She has described the Nana Akufo-Addo government decision not to recruit graduate teachers who sat but failed the just ended NTC licensure examination as unfair.
She made this known in an interview with GBC’s Radio Central monitored by Ghana24.org. The current Ghana teacher licensure examination (GTLE) Act 778 was not passed during her term in office as Education Minister.
“It is unfair because teachers after going through a 3 or 4-year course and passing all final examinations will then be asked to sit for a mandatory NTC licensure examination which is you don’t pass can’t teach,” she told GBC.
She furthered that, the teacher licensure examination is not a 3-hour sit-down examination without any formalized guidelines. Ahead of the 2020 general election, she indicated that the NDC will cancel the Ghana teacher licensure examination and national service that have been imposed on teachers.

The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) has also been drawn into the mass failure of teachers who sat the examination and indicated that there is the need for stakeholders to ensure, the massive failure of teachers in the May 2021 teacher licensure examination is avoided in future.

Some teachers are of the view that the mass failure is a deliberate attempt by the government to reduce the number of persons to employ. The examination is becoming an albatross around the necks of teachers.
